Specified Skilled Worker System
This is a new status of residence introduced on April 1, 2019. The ban on foreigners working has been lifted in 14 fields (12 as of 2023 due to integration) that are recognized as having a serious labor shortage. Since work in these industries includes simple labor, it was not possible for foreigners to do it until now, but due to the recent serious impact of the declining birthrate and aging population, the industry will not be able to operate as it is, so it has become possible to accept foreign workers.

Regarding employment, it will be a direct employment contract between the receiving organization (host company) and the foreigner with specific skills.

【Period of stay】 Renewal every 1 year, 6 or 4 months Up to 5 years
【Skill level】 Confirmed by examination, etc. (foreigners who have completed Technical Intern Training No. 2 are exempt from examinations, etc.)
【Japanese Proficiency level】Confirmed by examination, etc. of Japanese skills necessary for living and work (foreigners who have completed Technical Intern Training No. 2 are exempt from examinations, etc.)
【Family accompaniment】 Basically not allowed.
【Special Notes】Eligibility for support by the host organization or registered support organization

【Period of stay】Renewal every 3 years, 1 year or 6 months
【Skill level】 Confirmed by examination, etc.
【Japanese Proficiency level】No need to confirm by examination, etc.
【Family accompaniment】 Available if you meet the requirements (spouse / child)
【Special Notes】Not eligible for support from the host organization or registered support organization Currently, only the construction and shipbuilding industry
